Being the centre for three major religions and a destination that
has attracted people of all backgrounds for thousands of years, Israel is a
diverse and multifaceted country. A young nation with glimpses of antiquity
around every corner, nowhere is this mix more visible than in the two largest
cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Aviv means spring in Hebrew, and the city was named as such to
represent the rebirth of the Jewish nation. Along the Mediterranean coastline
and beautiful beaches, you’ll find the city’s Promenade. Stroll down the paved
pathways and sample local food and shops near the rejuvenated Tel Aviv Port. A
visit to the trendy shops around Neve Tzedek should also be included on your
itinerary. On Tuesdays and Fridays head to the Shuk HaCarmel Market, where
local artists sell unique craftwork and design. Tel Aviv’s Museum of Art and
the peaceful Meir Park are also not to be missed, as well as a trip to the Ramat
Gan Safari, where you can see lions, hippos and over 1,600 other animals.
If you want to explore some of the ancient sites of Israel,
nowhere is more historically significant than the ancient city of Jerusalem. A
region of historical importance to different religions and cultures since the
dawn of time, the city is packed with things to see. Go on a tour of the Old
City with both an Israeli and a Palestinian tour guide, who will take you to
important sites such as the Western Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Temple
Mount. The Israel Museum will give you a further introduction to the region’s 5,000
year history, while a visit to the Holocaust Museum of Yad Vashem should also
be made. ~
For more modern experiences, hang out in a trendy café in the Machane
Yehuda Market or visit the Museum of the Seam for contemporary exhibitions. In Israel, you will never be short of things to do. Explore the
ancient town centres, the markets and the cafés, sample lots of local food, or
visit the galleries and modern buildings that are popping up on every corner.
Go on tours to historic places or take a swim in the Dead Sea.
